When we speak about celebrities and famous personalities, many of them belong to Northeast India. Freedom fighters including Lachit Borphukan, Maniram Dewan, Kanaklata Barua, Rani Gaidinliu; singers like Bhupen Hazarika, Zubeen Garg, Papon Mahanta, Adil Hussain, Dipannita Sharma; sports icons like Mary Kom, Bhaichung Bhutia, Somdev, Sarita Devi; media icons like Arnab Goswami and others. have brought glory to the Northeast soil.
Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva :
Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva (1449 AD-1568 AD) is considered as the father of the modern Assamese race. He was a great messiah, who rescued the people of Brahmaputra valley from the evil medieval practices like human sacrifice.
Srimanta Sankaradeva was a cultural maestro too. He created a classical dance form known both as Sankari dance and Satriya dance.
Lachit Bhorphukan :
Lachit Bhorphukan (24th November 1622-25th April 1672) was a great warrior from Assam, where he was a commander of the army of the Ahom Kingdom. Lachit bravely defeated the powerful Mughal Army, using some of the most risky strategies, ever. He defeated the Mughals 16 times and is considered a pioneer of the now famous 'Jungle Warfare.
S.D. Burman :
Sachin Dev Burman (1 October 1906-31 October 1975) was an Indian music director and singer. A member of the Tripura royal family, he started his career with Bengali films in 1937. Later he began composing for Hindi movies, and became one of the most successful and influential Bollywood film music composers.
Rani Gaidinliu :
Gaidinliu (26 January 1915-17 February 1993) was a Naga spiritual and political leader who led a revolt against British rule in India. At the age of 13, she joined the Heraka religious movement of her cousin Haipou Jadonang. The movement later turned into a political movement seeking to drive out the British from Manipur and the surrounding Naga areas. Nehru gave her the title of "Rani" ("Queen"), and she gained local popularity as Rani Gaidinliu. She is referred to as Rani Laxmi Bai of the East.
Bhupen Hazarika :
Music maestro late Bhupen Hazarika (8th September 1926 5th November 2011), had been a good poet, music composer, singer, actor, journalist, author and filmmaker of the highest order. And his intellect and scholarship combined to make him an icon not only of Assam, but of the entire northeast. He was awarded Bharat Ratna.
Mary Kom :
Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom (born on 1 March 1983) is an Indian Olympic boxer and incumbent Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha. She became the first Indian woman boxer to get a Gold Medal in the Asian Games in 2014 at Incheon, South Korea and is the first Indian woman boxer to win gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. She is also the only boxer to become Asian Amateur Boxing Champion for record five times. She has been awarded Padma Shri (2006) and Padma Bhushan (2013).
Danny Denzongpa :
Danny Denzongpa (born on 25th February 1948) is an Indian film actor, singer and film director. He has mainly worked in Bollywood films, though he has also appeared in several Nepali, Tamil, Bengali and Telugu films. He has acted in about 190 Hindi films since 1971. In 2003, Denzongpa was awarded the Padma Shree, India's fourth-highest civilian honour. His film career spans more than 4 decades.
